Motorcycle Unit

The Motorcycle Unit is a specialized division of the Dewey Beach Police Department, designed to enhance mobility, visibility, and community engagement. Motor officers provide a highly flexible and responsive presence in areas where traditional patrol vehicles may be less effective, such as crowded beaches, special events, and narrow roadways/pathways.

Officers in this unit operate fully outfitted Zero DSR/X Police Motorcycles, and focus on:

  • Traffic Enforcement & Safety: Enforcing traffic laws, addressing speeding, impaired driving, and hazardous violations to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
  • Event Management: Providing rapid response and crowd management during parades, races, special events, and large gathering in our community.
  • Community Policing: Serving as approachable ambassadors of the department, fostering positive interactions with the public, and increasing police visibility.
  • Rapid Response: Navigating congested areas quickly to respond to emergencies, accidents, or calls for service where larger vehicles face delays.

Motor officers undergo advanced training in patrol operations, defensive riding, accident avoidance, and dignitary escorts. Their presence improves roadway safety and reinforces the department's commitment to professionalism, accessibility, and public trust. The Motorcycle Unit reflects the unique character of the Town of Dewey Beach by blending effective law enforcement with community-oriented policing in a highly visible and approachable manner.

Sgt. Schmidt and PFC Buchert are officers currently assigned to the unit.
