While Dewey Beach is a small town, at only approximately one mile long, unmanned aircraft systems (drones) offer an array of benefits to the policing operations of the town, especially during the busy summer months, and large events throughout the year. The Dewey Beach Police Department drones are equipped with a camera that has thermal imaging capabilities and an attachable spotlight to provide the ability to conduct night time operations. In addition, the drone is equipped with an attachable speaker with live broadcast abilities, as well as a collection of pre-recorded public safety alerts.

The Dewey Beach Police Department Drone Unit currently consists of two officers, PFC James Rieley, and CPL Jack Kane. Any officer interested in joining the unit is required to undergo a two-day training course as well as testing in order to obtain their FAA Part 107 pilot license. Like officers in all other units, drone operators undergo continuous training to serve the patrons of Dewey Beach, and surrounding areas to the best of their ability.
